What is Safe Environment

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops created the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People in June 2002, which addresses allegations of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic clergy.

This Charter led to the creation of the Office of Safe Environment at the Diocese of Owensboro. The Office of Safe Environment works for the protection of children, young people and other vulnerable individuals who have been entrusted to the care of our parishes, schools, religious education classes and other diocesan programs.

The Charter also includes guidelines for reconciliation, healing, accountability and prevention of future acts of abuse.

Who Needs to be Safe Environment Compliant

Individuals working with youth (children under the age of 18) and/or vulnerable adults (those over 18 years of age with mental/physical disabilities or illness and who may be unable to take care of/protect themselves against harm) are required by the Diocese of Owensboro to be Safe Environment Compliant.

If you currently work with, or plan to work with, the youth and/or vulnerable adults in the Holy Spirit community, it is required by the Diocese that you complete a Background Check, VIRTUS Online Safe Environment Training and Vulnerable Adult Ministry video every five years.  Below you will find a list of the ministries which require these items.  You are welcome to view and download the required forms located below, or pick them up directly from the parish office.
